Feature: A Weight Control Success Story
Anthony Reed, CPT, NSCA, ISSA, Certified Weight Consultant

Anthony grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was raised by a single mother who worked two jobs in order to support the family, which consisted of Anthony and five brothers. As a child his diet consisted of such foods as sausages, potatoes and bacon. These foods were high in fat and calories, but economical at the time.

Anthony started gaining weight when he was about 8 years old. By the time he was 19 years old he weighed about 335 pounds. He hid his  feelings by laughing a lot. "I was always the life of the party and would eat even when I was not hungry", stated Anthony.

At 37 years old Anthony decided to have weight loss surgery. Anthony describes his decision, "It got to the point where I couldn't get out of bed. I was dependent on others to help me with simple activities. I didn’t want to live this way".

On November 16, 2005, he underwent a Gastro-Bypass surgery. His highest weight was at 591 pounds. The first five months the weight really came off quickly and then the weight loss stopped. Anthony started to work out and made a commitment to change his lifestyle and food choices. It took him another two and a half years to lose 250 pounds.

Anthony emphasizes weight loss surgery is just a tool and not a quick fix or an easy way out. It's a complete life style change and unless you’re ready to really make that change it will not work.

My sister lost over 115 pounds on the Jenny Craig Program. Janet - You Look Great!

That's me.

"I am an accomplished dieter with a long history of fighting to keep my weight under control. In 1976 I lost 103 pounds and kept it off for over 12 years. I became a Registered Dietitian in 1979 and in 1986 I received my doctoral degree in Nutrition Education and Counseling.

Slowly I regained the weight and by May 2000, I weighed 208 pounds. With the skills I learned, I made the decision to the loss the weight again, but this time I was going to keep it off. By July  2001, I lost 80 pounds and I have maintained my weight around 128-133 pounds.
